The book provides an overview of Benjamin Russell’s artistic career from his voyage on the Kutusoff beginning in 1841 to his final series of lithographs and ship portraits in the 1870’s. Russell’s oeuvre is examined in relation to contemporary social and economic conditions. Several early works by Russell, recently conserved and exhibited for a limited time, appear in the catalog. The illustrated works provide valuable insight to the chronological and stylistic development of Russell’s scenes of whaling and ship portraiture.
This 78-page, softcover book is number 3 in the Museum's collections catalog series.
