Organized by the New Bedford Whaling Museum to mark the 50th anniversary of Cape Verdean Independence, two exhibitions weave together contemporary art and community storytelling to celebrate Cape Verdean culture and identity in New England and across the diaspora. Morabeza centers diverse stories of Cape Verdean immigrants in Southern New England, while Claridade showcases emerging and established Cape Verdean-descended artists working in Cabo Verde, New England, and the Netherlands. The accompanying publication, Cape Verdean Contemporary, includes essays in English and Kriolu by leading voices in the field of Cape Verdean studies and from the community, and showcases full color images of hundreds of items on loan from institutions and individuals.
