The Chase of the Bowhead Whale print depicts a bowhead whale pulling a whaleboat through the heavy seas of the Artic. The original oil painting, which is part of the New Bedford Whaling Museum's permanent collection, was painted by Clifford Warren Ashley in 1909. Born in New Bedford, Clifford Ashley was a skilled painter, depicting many scenes of Cape Cod, Buzzards Bay, and the waterfront of New Bedford. However, Ashley is most well know for his book, The Ashley Book of Knots, which contains descriptions and drawings of 3,854 knots. This book has received such acclaim that it is still in print today.
