This print, based on an 1889 painting by Charles Henry Gifford, is a tribute to Joshua Slocum and his boat, Spray. The original painting is a part of the New Bedford Whaling Museum's collection (2005.36) and depicts Slocum, who was the first person to sail solo around the world. In the artwork, the boat is seen on shore without a mast, while Slocum is seated beside it wearing a white shirt, black vest, and straw hat.
