Frederick Douglass (1812-1895) was an African-American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. To successfully escape slavery, Douglass dressed as a sailor and used a borrowed seaman's protection certificate, which identified him as a free man of color. He arrived in New Bedford in September 1839 with his wife Anna Murry Douglass, a free woman of color. It is in New Bedford that Frederick Douglass would earn his first wages, start a family, and become an internationally-renowned speaker and abolitionist.
