American whaling brigantine, Kate Cory, is depicted in this New Bedford Whaling Museum vignette from artist William Gilkerson. The Kate Cory was one of the last small whalers built in Westport, Massachusetts. The ship and her crew had a number of successful and largely uneventful voyages., but on April 15, 1863, the ship ran afoul of a Confederate raider and was subsequently burned.
